A mala necklace is an East Indian tool used in spiritual practice. It is strung/connected in divisions of 108 roundish beads (rudraksha seeds, pearls, semi precious or precious stones etc.). Mantra is a word or phrase (traditionally given to a student or spiritual aspirant by a Guru spiritual mentor/teacher) that holds a specific vibration when spoken. Mantra and mala are traditionally used together. As the beads pass through each finger the mantra is repeated out loud or internally. The number of times the mantra is spoken/remembered is significant. Use of mala and mantra is a powerful way to develop a relationship to meditation, intention and build a spiritual practice over time.
I have always been drawn to the art of jewelry craft. Jewelry is such a powerful statement; adorning, protecting, reminding us of what is important and sacred in our lives. Mala and mantra have been a part of my life since my late teens when I was given my first mantra by my Guru and a part of my jewelry craft since my mid thirties.
This mala represents the Manipura chakra. Chakras are considered powerful energy (Prana) centers that serve as potent connection points from the densest layers of the human experience to the subtle. Among many other attributes, Manipura (solar plexus) chakra is ruled by fire, governed by the Pitta Dosha and connected to the seed mantra RAM. When considering Manipura we are considering light and power. A glowing, warm, steady light is the intention. Power with clarity, dignity and humanity is the aim.
